I share this illustration to counter-balance the accusations often made against Israel as being “apartheid,” etc. The simple fact is that the Jewish population was forced out of each of these countries. Some whom I’ve met speak with great fondness of their memories of life in there — a life they can never recapture. Some of it lives on in the variety of musical traditions among Israelis — both in Israel and elsewhere. Jewish communities that were hundreds of years old — some over a thousand years — have disappeared. “Iraq,” for example, is the “Babylonia” of the Talmud.
