Once, in prayer I said,
“God, I will do what you want.”

Laughing lovingly,
God said,
“No you won’t.”

(A friend thought that this was very sad. I told him that on the contrary, I experienced God as loving, understanding, insightful and forgiving. This was a dialogue with God about a specific incident or moment. God’s response was not categorical, and certainly not a condemnation. It was said with Divine amusement.)
