(5/6/18, after hearing about the passing of a high school classmate)

I didn’t know her well.

She was mysterious to me —
but then, so many people were back then.

Some years later,
I heard that she had become
a Scientologist.

How surprised I was
to realize
that she had had her inner turmoil,
like mine.

How many of us
had come to that place daily,
filled with fear, or worry or anger or sadness,
hoping our art would free us?

Sometimes, it does; at least for moments.
But real personal liberation is not so transient.

She seems to have married.
I hope it was happy.
And if she had children,
I hope that being a parent
Was a deep source of happiness for her.

I didn’t know her well.
